Forty
years after Roe v. Wade the abortion debate rages on. Isn't it time for
the two 'sides' to find their common ground and work from there?
Nobody
is 'pro-abortion.' Some people, however, are for abortion rights. Instead
of arguing over whether or not the right exists (as the Court has ruled it
does, to a point) how about we start trying to reduce (ideally to zero) the
number of abortions? And can't we best do that by reducing (ideally to
zero) the number of unwanted pregnancies?
Both 'sides' can promote
their favored approach. If you believe that abstinence from sex is the
key, promote away. Just don't expect the other 'side' to not have their
say. People that favor a more comprehensive approach aren't being ideological,
they're being pragmatic, i.e. looking at results. Stop fighting and work
together. (What a concept.)
Kevin,
ReplyDeleteWhat amazes me is that the GOP controlled House is working on a nation-wide abortion law while they are cutting funding for nutrition programs for babies. We must protect the unborn.
But, once thet are born - If they are poor and will likely vote Deemocrat - fuck em...
Sarge
They also don't want to fund anything to do with birth control. They're a weird bunch ...
DeleteFar too practical and makes too much sense to gain traction. My dad was of the view, "you bring a kid into this world, you'd better be ready to support it." That was after the "how to make a kid," lecture. Gives me an idea though, one that, given my recent track record, won't go anywhere.
ReplyDeleteEarly education is key, I tell you. Sounds like you had it. ; )

DeleteOf all the industrialized nations, and many that are not, we stand out as having no natalist policy. These policies promote childbirth and parenting in many ways. Women may have time off before birth and after without fear of losing jobs and in many cases with pay in most cases for part of the period. The father can also have time off after birth for various periods and conditions. Education is provided in many countries on nutrition, health of the mother and baby. Some have aid for baby setting expenses. The help varies by nation, but the important thing is it is there, and it is a right. All these countries pass us too in mortality rates. It is amazing that babies in the US die at the highest rate among western nations, even higher than Cuba. If we had a pro-natal policy far fewer would opt for abortion, seems like the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddist thing to do, but???
ReplyDeleteI read today that half of all pregnancies are 'oopsies.' Is this true anywhere else, I wonder?
